GMC plans to build an application
architecture framework that will allow it to roll out Web-based applications for internal
and external use. The software will be constructed using XML, integrated third party
products, data exchange scripts and integrated services. The primary vendor involved in
this project is DataChannel.
GMC's goal is to unify the data
residing within several of its legacy systems to coordinate enterprise resource planning
systems. For example, GMC is investigating the possibility of automatically sending an
alert message when a part on a vehicle is malfunctioning, or in need of service.
One initiative will be an
intranet-based application providing access to engineering information via a Web browser.
This will enable GM engineers and business partners to view a 3-D image of an auto part,
chassis or complete vehicle and reach into associated databases for the accompanying
specifications and warranty information, together with facts such as the name of the
engineer who last worked on the component.
